Solutions for Challenges in Food Sales Online


In Sweden you can order food easy Online and there are many different providers to choose between. For consumers the Top 3 Reasons to shop food Online is because It's Easy, It's Timesaving and the Wide range of products to choose from, but there are still 55% who say that they are Not going to buy any food Online during next year.
Let's look at the challenges in the Industry and what the consumers thinks is a threshold to cross.
In the digital food trade report 2014 from Svensk Digital Handel we can read;
There are some areas that still are seen as challenges in the industry:
  • Inventory management and picking routines
  • Vending presentation
  • Deliveries
  • Delivery times
  • Returns
Moreover, part of the challenge for food sales on the consumer side:
  • Changing consumer behaviour
  • Breaking habits
  • Clamping and feel factor

So how can the Online Food Companies solve challenges?Inventory management and picking routines - Why does this not work?
  • Do the staff have the right education?
  • Does the company communicating their message out the right way?
  • Are everyone within the company on the same page?
  • Is there a strategy around this kind of routines?
My answer is - Provide everyone with what they need to do the best job or to feel confident with the products they are buying. Make the picking routines easy for the staff and show how you work to your customers, so that they know what they can expect.
  • Make a video for the staff on how to do it, use QR video codes on every different kind of products with instructions of how to pick the items together.
  • ...and why not Make a video for the webpage on how you are picking for example the vegetables and the other items for the customers, so that they know they will get the best in their delivery from you, they will never have to doubt. In this way you also reduce the "Clamping and feel factor" and leave the customers with the feeling that they not need to feel all the items, they gives you the trust to do it for them.

  • Improve knowledge of staff
  • Increased sense of community
Present the vending presentation with a video!
Why? Because,
  1. The customers experience more satisfaction after they have seen a video (than pictures and text)
  2. Customers feel more confident and are buying more items as well as more expensive items
  3. More satisfied customers reduces the stress on customer service and reduces the returns
Show the customers how the delivery works. Make a video about the persons who deliver the food... Who Is the persons who deliver the food - Show the importens of their work in the chain. Show Why you have the delivery times you have and what customers can do to make things work better for you. Team build with your customers. Make "video customer cases" to show families that your customers can identify themselves with.
